Fire Proof Roof? Cement Roofing Tiles – Did You Know?

MAKING CONCRETE ROOF TILES

CONCRETE ROOF TILES ARE MADE USING A LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE (SAND) MIXED WITH CEMENT AND PRESSED ON TO MOLDS THROUGH A HIGHLY SPECIALIZED PROCESS.
AFTER THE CEMENT AND AGGREGATE ARE MIXED (AND A DYE FOR COLORING IS ADDED) THE CONCRETE IS PRESSED ON TO AN ALUMINUM MOLD TO SHAPE IT INTO THE DESIRED DESIGN OF TILE. STYLES INCLUDE WOOD SHAKE, SLATE, ESPANA, HOMESTEAD, VILLA AND SPLIT SHAKE. AFTER THE CONCRETE IS PRESSED ON TO THE MOLDS THE WET TILES ARE ALLOWED TO CURE FOR 24 HOURS IN A KILN THAT EVENTUALLY HEATS UP TO 140-DEGREES. AFTER THE TILES ARE REMOVED FROM THE KILN THEY’RE SEPERATED FROM THE MOLDS AN ACRYLIC EMULSION IS APPLIED TO PROTECT THE TILES FROM THE ELEMENTS. THE TILES ARE THEN STACKED, WRAPPED AND STORED FOR 28 DAYS (FOR ADDITIONAL CURING) BEFORE THEY’RE SHIPPED TO THE DISTRIBUTOR.
